Causes of Sore and Inflamed Gums

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is the most common reason for sore and inflamed gums. This condition is an infection of the gum tissue that starts out with relatively mild symptoms, such as swelling, redness, and a tendency to bleed during brushing and flossing. How to Manage Sore and Inflamed Gums

The good news is that if you are dealing with sore and inflamed gums, there are several steps you can take to find relief and protect your long-term oral health:

  • Brush your teeth gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid further irritation. Be sure to thoroughly clean the area along your gumline.
  • Floss your teeth carefully to remove plaque and food particles without damaging your gums. Never “snap” the floss between your teeth. Rather, move it gently intentionally.
  • Rinse your mouth with a warm saltwater solution to reduce swelling and kill bacteria.
  • Drink plenty of water to keep your mouth hydrated and wash away food debris.
  • Eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals that are known to support oral health. These include vitamin C, vitamin D, and calcium.
  • Refrain from smoking or using any form of tobacco to allow your gums to heal more effectively.
  • Avoid sugary or acidic foods and beverages; these can worsen gum sensitivity.
  • Visit your dentist for a checkup. Your dentist can diagnose gum disease and other oral health issues, and they can provide timely treatment. They can also offer personalized home care tips to help you protect your gums on a daily basis.
